Pipelines

Pipelines are vulnerable to corrosion, temperature variation and seismic activity - and IFS products are used to protect them, worldwide.

Sub-sea pipelines are a particular challenge, and an area in which we have developed a particular expertise. We offer a range of marine-grade polyurethanes, and we have developed a pipe coating system using a controlled rotational casting technique. For deep-water applications, where most protective foams would be crushed by the high pressure, we also offer a range of syntactic foams - solid polyurethane filled with minute glass spheres – which are capable of withstanding the pressure and maintaining the highest performance at the greatest depths.

On land, our foam products insulate, support and protect overground and underground pipelines alike. The new BTC pipeline, for example, runs for 1760km, from the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean. On the way, it reaches heights of 2800m, crosses 1500 watercourses, including the 500m-wide Cayhan River, and passes through areas of frequent seismic activity. Rarely can a pipeline have needed more protection – and it gets it from erosion breaker dams manufactured with IFS Cellafoam 35, a low-density foam designed to provide support with flexibility.
