Marine

IFS is renowned for its’ large range of proven and technically superior grades of polyurethane for the demanding marine environment.

Polyurethane foam is an inherently buoyant material (at a density of 40kg/m3, 1 cubic metre will support a weight of 1 tonne) which is why it is widely used in the manufacture of buoys, booms and fenders. The foam is protected by a spray-applied PU elastomer, resistant to salt water, abrasion, and the growth of marine organisms.

High-performance elastomer systems have been used for some of the most demanding applications in the marine environment, particularly in terms of high temperature and high pressure applications. Sub-sea applications include foam systems for concrete-coated pipelines and polyether/polyester solids for a variety of pipe-coating and pipe jointing applications.

In addition, with the outlawing of TbT in anti-fouling paints and coatings, IFS is actively developing tin-replacement additives for marine polyurethanes, and sea-trials to date have produced excellent results. See our brochure on “Offshore Engineering Polymers” in the Brochure section.
